aka Sanctorius Sanctorius was an Italian #physician who made the first systematic study of basal metabolism. In his research, he was also the first to employ instruments of #precision and to apply quantitative #experimental research techniques in the practice of medicine. His adaptation of the #pendulum to medical practice (to determine #PulseRate ) was probably inspired by his discussions with #Galileo on the latter's experiments with pendulums in 1602. His most famous medical contribution was a balance used to study the #metabolic changes undergone by his experimental subjects, who included Galileo. He wrote many works to disseminate knowledge of the natural sciences. These were based on his definition of force as “expression for the cause of a possible or an actual movement,” and on the unity of matter and force. In 1971, Vane discovered how #aspirin's effect was to block the formation of the prostaglandins involved in #pain, #fever, and #inflammation. Further, a relatively small dose (75 mg/day) prevents blood clotting and lessen heart attacks, strokes and leg thromboses. In 1976, he discovered #Prostacyclin , a blood-vessel dilating prostaglandin that inhibits #blood-clotting. His original work falls into two main groups—the physiology of #muscle and #nerve, which occupied the earlier years of his life, and the chemistry of #digestion, which he began to investigate while at Berlin with Virchow. He was proposed the word #ENZYME meaning "in #yeast" (1878), and he isolated #TRYPSIN from pancreatic juice. He demonstrated usefulness of cytophysiological investigations for solving problems of general physiology. He developed a process for preventing the oil from separating in Jif peanut butter. Chemists at the #Pfizer pharmaceutical company found, however, that while the drug had little effect on angina, it could induce penile #erections, typically within 30 to 60 minutes. Seeing the economic opportunity in such a biochemical effect, Pfizer decided to market the drug for impotence. Sildenafil was patented in 1996, and a mere two years later–a stunningly short time compared to other drugs–it was approved by the FDA for use in treating “#ErectileDysfunction,” the new clinical name for impotence. #German-born British physiologist who elucidated how #nerve cells transmit signals to muscles. Although it was known that neurons release acetylcholine at their terminal ends, Katz discovered in the early 1950s that the release of this #neurotransmitter occurs continuously and spontaneously, although at low levels when neurons are at rest. Further, he found that #acetylcholine is released in discrete packets, later called vesicles. In the late 1960s, Katz determined that the amount of acetylcholine in a vesicle was related to the electrical potential at the terminal of an axon (the long extension of a neuron that transmits the impulse).
