Being the only planet on which humans survive, Earth rotates about its own axis.

The day is observed to celebrate the French Physicist, Leon Foucault who in 1851 demonstrated that the Earth rotates on its axis. Foucault suspended a lead-filled brass sphere from the top of the Panthéon in Paris to prove his theory. The lead-filled brass sphere is now called the Foucault Pendulum from the top of the Pantheon in Paris. Foucault’s Pendulum has shown that the plane of the swing of the pendulum rotated relative to that of the Earth’s own rotation. Foucault’s pendulum has demonstrated that the earth’s rotation is the cause of gravity. www.drbjagadish.com

American physician who contributed to the acceptance of the lifesaving CPR technique.

In 1949-50, he evaluated the various methods of artificial ventilation with arm maneuvers and chest compressions used at the time, and found them to be of marginal benefit. Dr. James Elam published the first scientific paper (1956) showing that oxygen could be delivered into a non-breathing patient's lungs from a rescuer's exhaled breath, using a tube. Dr. Peter Safar followed with a simple gadget-free method, exhaling air directly into the mouth of a non-breathing person (1957). At the University of Southern California, quickly repeated the experiments in children. Within a year, these three doctors convinced the world to change artificial breathing methods. www.drbjagadish.com

English theoretical physicist who is one of the world's leaders in his field. His principal areas of research are theoretical cosmology and quantum gravity. Hawking is the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University (formerly held by Sir Isaac Newton). Afflicted with Lou Gehrig's disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis; ALS), Hawking is confined to a wheelchair and is unable to speak without the aid of a computer voice synthesizer. However, despite his challenges, he has utilized his intelligence, knowledge and abilities to make remarkable contributions to the field of cosmology (the study of the universe as a whole). Hawking wrote the book A Brief History of Time. www.drbjagadish.com

John Ernest Walker is a British chemist who shared the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1997 for his pioneering work on how the enzyme ATP synthase catalyses the formation of the “high-energy” compound adenosine triphosphate (ATP). These molecules of ATP function as a carrier of energy in all living organisms, whether simple bacteria, fungus or plant life, or higher animals and humans. ATP takes in the chemical energy released when nutrients are metabolized, and carries that energy to the various reactions that require energy. Such reactions include cell-building, the contraction of muscle fibers, or nerve signals. (Corecipients of the Noble Prize were Paul D. Boyer for related work with ATP, and Jens C. Skou who researched separately.) www.drbjagadish.com

French chemist who made important contributions to industrial chemistry and discovered cellulose, a basic constituent of plant cells. His father's factories produced various chemicals, and refined sugar, so Payen studied science. In 1815, age 20, he was made manager of his father's plant for refining imported crude borax. There, he developed a synthesis for borax from soda and boric acid and in 1820 he created a new industry which could market the synthetic product at one-third the price of the refined natural borax. His father died in 1820, and Payen took over the family business. By 1822, he had found the value of animal charcoal to clarify sugar solutions. In 1833, Payen discovered the first enzyme, for which he coined the name diastase. It converts starch to sugar, and was later (1893) called amylase. www.drbjagadish.com

Swiss immunologist and pathologist who received the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1996 because of his relatively early work with colleague Peter Doherty defining the system by which the immune system identifies friend and foe. His work since then has built upon this discovery, revealing how the thymus gland selects only white blood cells that react properly to virus-infected cells and investigating the complex interplay by which viruses and their hosts co-evolve. Zinkernagel has also been a vocal proponent of the promise of biotechnology in his native Switzerland. www.drbjagadish.com

King Camp Gillette was an American inventor and manufacturer who invented and manufactured the safety razor with disposable blades. After persistent efforts to invent something that everyone would use, by 1895 produced a crude version of a disposable razor blade. it took another six years to refine his invention. On 15 Nov 1904 he was issued U.S. patent No. 775,134 for his idea and founded the Gillette Safety Razor Company in Boston, Mass., to make his razor and blades. In 1903, he sold 168 blades, but in the following year he sold 90,000 razors and over 12 million blades. Although he remained president of the company until 1931, he retired to Los Angeles in 1913, having become a millionaire. A utopian, he wrote four books translating his business experience into social theories, culminating with The People's Corporation (1924). www.drbjagadish.com

American physiologist who discovered that fibres within the same nerve cord possess different functions. In 1910 he accepted the chair of physiology at Washington University in St. Louis, which he held until his retirement in 1946. While his department became one of the major research centers in physiology in America. Erlanger continued his work on cardiovascular physiology. During WW I, he carried out research on the problem of shock. In 1921 he shifted his interests to neurophysiology, and began joint work, with colleague Herbert Gasser, on the amplification and recording of nerve action potentials with the cathode ray oscilloscope, for which they were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1944. www.drbjagadish.com

Born in 1734, his development of hypnotism coincided with the Enlightenment and the Age of Reason in the 18th century. Today, professionals use hypnosis in psychotherapy. Some of the treatments used include: reducing anxiety treating phobias an approach to weight loss quitting bad habits (such as smoking) improving sleep hot flashes In 2004, Board Certified Hypnotist Tom Nicoi and the World Hypnotism Day Committee launched the observance to encourage hypnotism professionals to promote the benefits and truth of hypnosis. www.drbjagadish.com

Braille is a tactile writing system. It is written on a special type of raised paper. Earlier It’s code was based on 12 dots. The 12 dots were placed in rows of 66. Before Braille, people with visual disabilities used to read using the Haüy system, which involved Latin letters being embossed on leather or thick paper. Braille first published the Braille script system in 1829. Louis Braille died on 6 January 1832 at the age of 43. Braille was officially recognized in 1868, 16 years after his death. This language is still used all over the world today. World Braille Day is observed to spread awareness about the importance of Braille in communication. The world’s first International Braille Day was observed on January 4, 2019. The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution for World Braille Day on 6 November 2018. World Braille Day is observed every year on 4 January to ensure the human rights of blind people and people with low vision and to meet their basic needs. www.drbjagadish.com
