The #InternationalDayofNonViolence is marked on 2 October, the birthday of #MahatmaGandhi, leader of the #Indian #independence movement and pioneer of the philosophy and strategy of #nonviolence.
The #UnitedNations General Assembly, in a resolution adopted on 5 June 2007, established the commemoration, the International Day as an occasion to disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness.
The resolution reaffirms the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence and the desire to secure a culture of #peace, #tolerance, #understanding and non-violence.
It was in January 2004 that Iranian Noble Laureate Shirin Ebadi proposed the idea for the day. The idea attracted many Congress leaders, who in 2007 called upon the UN to adopt the idea.
The then minister of state for external affairs Anand Sharma introduced the resolution in the General Assembly on behalf of 140 co-sponsors.
