#Maritime comes from the #Latin word maritimus, which means "of the sea," so the meaning hasn't evolved much. Whales and dolphins are maritime animals, and according to maritime law, the captain of a ship can marry two people at sea.

The first #WorldMaritimeDay was observed on 17 March, 1978 to commemorate the day on which the #IMO Convention came into effect. One of the IMO's top priorities for the upcoming years is the promotion of sustainable shipping and marine development.

The World Maritime theme for 2022 - 'New technologies for greener shipping' - reflects the need to support a green transition of the maritime sector into a sustainable future, while leaving no one behind. The theme provides an opportunity to focus on the importance of a sustainable maritime sector and the need to build back better and greener in a post pandemic world.
