#American #inventor and #aeromedical #scientist who developed the first reliable, low-cost, mass-produced #medical #respirator, the #Bird Universal Medical #Respirator for acute or chronic #cardiopulmonary care.
To continue its development and marketing, he founded #BirdProductsCorporation (1954). He tested it on patients so seriously ill that cardiopulmonary failure was expected, yet many of them survived due to his device—which became known as “the bird.”
Bird continued to make improvements. It was widely adopted by hospitals around the world. The “#Babybird” respirator introduced in 1970 greatly reduced #infant deaths due to respiratory problems.
