American #virologist, #microbiologist and virologist who (collaborating with Frederick C. Robbins and Thomas H. Weller) was awarded the #NobelPrize for Physiology or #Medicine for 1954 for his part in cultivating the #poliomyelitis virus in nonnervous-tissue #cultures (1949), a preliminary step to the development of the #PolioVaccine. They had cultivated the polio #virus in test tube cultures of human tissue for the first time. They further demonstrated that the virus could be grown on a wide variety of tissue and not just nerve cells. This at last allowed the polio virus to be studied, typed, and produced in quantity. Without such an advance the triumphs of Albert Sabin and Jonas Salk in developing a vaccine against polio in the 1950s would have been impossible.

American #surgeon who was a pioneer in #heart #transplant surgery. He began (1967) the heart transplantation program at Stanford Medical Center. On 6 Jan 1968, he performed the first heart transplant in the U.S. on Mike Kasperak, 54, who survived for 15 days afterwards. Shumway spent years researching ways to extend life after a transplant. His team found a way to identify rejection early, so #powerful #immunosuppressants were used only when needed. From late 1980, using the new anti-rejection drug #cyclosporine which didn't destroy the body's defenses against infection, heart transplants became a common procedure. In 1981, with Dr. Bruce Reitz, he performed the world's first combined heart and #lung transplant.

This day is certainly not about celebrating the #dreaded #toothache. No way! Instead, Toothache Day is actually more about #education and #awareness and helping people learn how to prevent them happening to begin with and how best to make them go away, and quick! #Dental caries is an #infection, #bacterial in origin, that causes #demineralization and #destruction of the hard tissues, usually by production of acid by bacterial fermentation of the food debris accumulated on the tooth surface. It is so important that we learn how to take care of our #teeth and not only get rid of nasty aches but also stop them coming back or turning into something more serious, and Toothache Day is a great opportunity to promote and celebrate #health, share knowledge and fill your brain with info and facts in a fun and silly way. One thing is for sure though, there will be no sugary candy or soda involved! #HardTissues #BacterialFermentation #FoodDebris #NastyAches #ToothacheDay

Born 9 Feb 1854; died 10 Aug 1929 at age 75.

Dutch #physician who pioneered family planning with the world's #first #birth #control #clinic. As the first woman to attend university in the Netherlands, she studied #medicine, and became the country's first woman doctor. She took over her father's medical practice in Amsterdam. Soon she limited her practice to #women and #children, also holding a free clinic for the poor twice a week. In 1881, Jacobs undertook the first systematic study of contraception. Many of her patients were worn down from too many #pregnancies, and in 1882 she began prescribing #diaphragms as birth control, effectively opening the first birth control clinic in the world. She taught #hygiene and child care, and strongly campaigned on women's #health and #safety #issue, leading to new laws. #BirthControl #ChildCare

The #Internet has been an #amazing #invention that has undoubtedly change the world in more ways than we can think of. Not all of those ways, unfortunately, have been #positive. We can #connect to #people #faster, find things easier, and transfer information at the speed of light. These very #boons of #communication can become the #bane of #safety. So much of our private lives and #information get transferred over the internet, Safer Internet Day reminds us to protect ourselves from the dangers there and make the internet a little safer for everyone. Safer Internet Day is globally celebrated to promote safer and more responsible use of internet and digital technologies across the board. It’s curated by the network of European Safer Internet Centres. #SID #SaferInternetDay

The creation of #Laugh and Get Rich Day had only your best interest at #heart. The day is about encouraging #laughter so that the effects can be felt across all areas of life. #Science has proven that laughter actually can be #medicine. Those who are in pain or suffering from chronic illness can increase the production of #endorphins. When the body releases endorphins the result is a lift in mood and a decrease in pain. This is the basis for what might be accomplished on Laugh and Get Rich Day. #LaughAndGetRichDay #LAGRD #LiftMood #DecreasePain

Born 8 Feb 1777; died 27 Sep 1838 at age 61.

French #chemist who #discovered the #element #iodine. As the son of a saltpeter manufacturer from Dijon, he grew interested in #chemistry and was apprenticed to a #pharmacist. While in military service as a pharmacist, he became the first to #isolate pure #morphine from #opium (1804). He returned to assist at his father's saltpeter business, where the ashes of kelp seaweed were leached for #sodium and #potassium #salts using #sulphuric #acid. In 1811, from the mother liquor, he observed rising clouds of purple vapour which condensed on cold surfaces as dark crystals with a metallic lustre. He thought these could be a new element, but lacked ability to fully confirm his suspicion. This was later verified by Joseph-Louis Gay-Lussac and Humphry Davy.

International Epilepsy Day raises awareness about #epilepsy. The day also focuses on epilepsy #education and promotes ways to ensure all who need #treatment receives it. Epilepsy is a #neurological #disorder that is marked by episodes of #sensory #disturbances and convulsions called #seizures. Abnormal electrical activity in the #brain causes these #seizures. #Strokes, head injuries, genetic conditions, brain damage, and brain tumors are all known causes of the condition. About 50 million people around the world have epilepsy. It is one of the most common neurological conditions across the globe. In some parts of the world, people with epilepsy face #stigma and #discrimination. Those with epilepsy may also face #barriers to #education and #employment. Some people who have epileptic seizures are not allowed to drive or operate heavy machinery. Epilepsy can have a profound effect on one’s life in other ways. Because seizures can be unpredictable, many who have it are unable to do things, like going #swimming, by themselves. This can make those with epilepsy feel isolated. The condition can also take a toll on their mental health. #InternationalEpilepsyDay #HeadInjuries #GeneticConditions #BrainDamage #BrainTumors #FeelIsolated #MentalHealth

Born 7 Feb 1870; died 28 May 1937 at age 67.

Austrian #psychiatrist and #ophthalmologist who founded the school of individual #psychology. Adler began his medical career as an #ophthalmologist, but later turned to mental disease and became a prominent member of the #psychoanalytical group which formed around Sigmund Freud in 1900. Adler developed a theory of organic inferiority and compensation (inferiority complex). In 1911 he broke with Freud and investigated the psychology of the individual person considered to be different from others. His therapeutic methods were supportive, designed to avoid blame or a superior attitude by the practitioner, to reduce resistance and raise awareness of individual behaviour. He moved to the USA to teach in 1932.
