Donor Day is a holiday that celebrates all those people who have helped save people’s lives by donating #blood, #marrow, #tissue, and even #organs. It’s a holiday that drives home exactly how amazing and giving the human spirit is because it pays tribute to so many people who have donated of themselves, often to help save the life of someone they’ve never met. It’s quite easy, and don’t worry because you don’t have to go out and actually find someone who needs an organ. You can take a small step by donating some blood, which is a completely painless process. However, your blood could be instrumental in saving someone’s life because blood transfusions are responsible for saving millions of lives annually. Donor Day is all about being selfless and giving of yourself to save another person’s life. It’s a celebration of everything that’s wonderful about #humanity, and a holiday we should all be celebrating. #Health #Charity #Life #NationalDonorDay #SaveLives
Willem Johan Kolff was a Dutch-American #physician and #biomedical engineer who pioneered #artificial #organs. He invented the artificial #kidney machine in 1943, before he emigrated to the U.S. (1950). He is known as Father of #Dialysis. In Spring 1955, the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs was formed. Kolff became its first president. He headed a team which invented the first totally artificial #heart, a pneumatic pump, which was tested on 12 Dec1957, implanted within the chest of dog. It kept the 20.7-kg dog alive for 90 minutes. This was the first time an animal had lived with an implanted totally artificial heart. By 2 Dec 1982, under his supervision, the first fully artificial heart was implanted in a human patient. It was designed by Robert K. Jarvik, one of Kolff's students, that implanted the artificial heart which kept the patient, Barney Clark, alive for 112 days, thus proving the viability of such a procedure.

Scottish #anatomist, #surgeon and #pathologist who was an early #advocate of #investigation and #experimentation, and a founder of pathological anatomy in England. He made many important studies in comparative aspects of #biology, #anatomy, #physiology, and #pathology. Hunter's broad interests included the advancement of #dentistry, observations on #inflammation, treatment of #gun-wounds and some work on venereal diseases. In 1764, he set up his own anatomy school in London, and was elected a fellow of the Royal Society (5 Feb 1767). Following his appointment as surgeon to King George III (1776) he became deputy surgeon to the British Army (1786) and was made Surgeon General in (1789). He was a younger brother of William Hunter, the anatomist.
Dutch naturalist, known for his #skilled #biological #microscopical observations and accurate #illustrations, who was the first to describe the #Redbloodcells (1658). He studied and illustrated the life histories and #anatomy of many #species of #insects, which he classified on the basis of development. He demonstrated the presence of #butterfly wings in #caterpillars about to undergo #pupation. To facilitate the study of human anatomy, he developed better methods for injecting wax and dyes into #cadavers. He was one of the first to #dissect under water and to remove #fat by organic solvents. He demonstrated experimentally that whereas #muscles alter in shape during contraction, their volume is not thereby increased, which contradicted beliefs of the time.

Today, just 30 per cent of researchers worldwide are women, and only 35 per cent of all students enrolled in #STEM related fields of study are women. We’re celebrating International Day of Women and Girls in Science and calling on everyone to smash stereotypes, defy gender biases and defeat discrimination that hold women and girls back in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. Our future will be marked by scientific and technological progress, which can only be achieved when women and girls are #creators, #owners, and leaders of science, #technology and #innovation. Bridging the gender gap in STEM is vital to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and for creating infrastructure, services and solutions that work for all people. #WomenInScience #GenderEquality #LifeSavingMedicine #BrokenTheSoundBarrier #LeaderOfScience

The National Inventors’ Day to celebrate past and present inventors. It was first introduced in 1983 and marks the birthday of Thomas Edison. Well, it’s National Inventors’ Day, and we should all be celebrating! Without our #inventors, where might we be? Humanity’s inventiveness is what sets us apart from every other species on this planet, and it’s through our inventions that we can see our own progress as a species. We’ve come a long way since the #invention of the wheel, and that’s worth celebrating. #InventorsDay #ThomasEdison
