#American #physical #chemist who shared the 1985 #NobelPrize in chemistry (with Herbert A. Hauptman) for “for their outstanding achievements in the development of direct methods for the determination of #crystal #structures.”
Their work made possible the determination of such #3D crystal structures as #hormone, #vitamin and #antibiotic #molecules.
He began his career with a brief time in #Chicago in the early 1940s working for the #Manhattan Project developing the #atomicbomb, then he joined the staff of the #NavalResearch Laboratory in 1946. He became their chief scientist for the #Laboratory for the #Structure of Matter in 1968.
