#Swedish #endocrinologist who coined the term #MitochondrialMedicine.
He was a productive #researcher in that field (1950s-1990s). Notably, he identified (1988) the cause of a number of certain diseases, including #diabetes, was imbalances of the #oxidation process. #LuftDisease was the first #biochemically defined #mitochondrial #disease.
He was the first to demonstrate the diabetes control was aggravated by #stress hormones and #inheritance played a role in the #cells' production of #insulin.
He was an important leader in advancing the care of diabetes patients including providing #nurses in diabetes wards with specialized training.
