#American #biochemist who made “fundamental studies of the biochemistry of #NucleicAcids , with particular regard to #recombinant-DNA” techniques for which he shared the #NobelPrize for #Chemistry in 1980 (with Walter Gilbert and Frederick Sanger).

#Berg's pioneering #experiment, in which he was the first person to construct a recombinant-DNA molecule, initiated #GeneticEngineering . Such molecules contain parts of #DNA from different #species, for example, a #chromosome from a #virus combined with #genes from a #bacterial chromosome. DNA molecules from viruses, being relatively small, are useful for such investigations. Important practical applications now include the manufacture of human #hormone with the aid of bacteria.
