In 1921, Dr Marie Stopes (1880-1958) opened Britain's first #birthcontrol clinic in North London. The Mothers' Clinic, at 61 Marlborough Road, Holloway, which offered free #familyplanning advice to poor #women through staff midwives and nurses. It was funded by her second husband, Humprey Roe. In 1902, Marie Stopes had graduated from college as both a botanist and geologist (and had a doctorate degree in geology by 1904). Her book, Married Love and Wise Parenthood was published in 1918. Now, the clinic she established three years later also collected scientific data concerning #contraception. Since 1925, at a new location, 108 Whitfield Street in Central London, the clinic remains as the Marie Stopes House of Marie Stopes International. She saw the National Birth Control Council formed in 1930.

English physician who made a classic study of the medicinal use of #digitalis. From his interest in botany, he paid attention to folk remedies used by herb-gatherers, including the #foxglove. The leaf extract was efficacious in use for certain cases of " #dropsy " (#oedema, caused by #heartfailure). He determined the doses safe to use, and published a careful report of his findings in An Account of the Foxglove (1785). His report gave good case histories, including failures as well as successes. Thus he added digitalis as a very useful drug for physicians to use to steady and strengthen #heart action. He was also a mineralogist, and #witherite (barium carbonate) is named after him. He suffered greatly for years from chest disease, probably tuberculosis.

Walter Rudolf Hess was a Swiss physiologist who shared (with António Egas Moniz) the 1949 #NobelPrize for Physiology or Medicine for “for his discovery of the functional organization of the #interbrain as a coordinator of the activities of the internal organs.” In 1948, Hess devised suitable techniques to implant electrodes in the brains of rats, from which he could locate areas of the #brain associated with certain #instincts. Through his research, he identified how particular areas of the brain (and especially the #hypothalamus) are involved with the functioning of the body's internal #organs, and areas associated with #autonomic functions such as sleep, hunger or #defense mechanisms.

Dutch #botanist who was one of the first #microbiologists to recognize the importance of #lactic #acid #bacteria for #food production. He contributed to #agriculture, #botany, #microbiology, #chemistry and #genetics. In research on #gall #wasps and the formation of galls (1882) he laid groundwork for the theory of ontogeny in higher #plants and #animals whereby growth #enzymes act in series in a fixed order (1917). Since his father was a tobacco dealer who went bankrupt, he researched the tobacco mosaic virus, which causes a disease of tobacco plants with serious economic impact. He discovered that even after filtering the sap of an infected plant to remove bacteria, the liquid was still able to carry infection to another plant. Thus he knew the disease was not due to bacteria, but by something else in the the liquid, which he called a filterable #virus (from Latin word for poison) but which later researchers demonstrated in fact had a particle form.

World Social Work Day recognizes the hard work and dedication of social workers. A global organization of #social #workers comes together for social #justice, human rights, and social development all through the promotion of best practices in social work. Social workers serve many roles in their #communities. They assess their client’s needs and challenges. As advocates, they speak for their clients, getting them access to the resources they need to improve their lives. Social workers also respond to crisis situations. They work in many settings, too. Social workers find positions in medical facilities, child welfare and human service agencies, and #schools. They can also work in #education, #teaching new social workers. World Social Work Day celebrates the achievements of social work globally and locally. It also recognizes the efforts of individuals who’ve chosen social work as a profession. #WSWD #WorldSocialWorkDay #SocialWorkers #SocialJustice #HumanRights #SocialDevelopment #MedicalFacilities #ChildWelfare #HumanServiceAgencies

English #obstetrician, #epidemiologist and public health reformer who was among the first to use #anesthesia, renowned as a pioneer #epidemiologist. In On the Mode of Communication of #Cholera (1849), Snow suggested that cholera was a #contagious #disease easily transmitted by contaminated water. The widely-held theory was that diseases are caused by bad air and his idea was ignored. Then, in London's 1854 cholera emergency, he painstakingly correlated individual cholera casualties to the water supply they had used in each case. He thus solved the deadly epidemic by removing a pump handle of the community water pump that he found to be the culprit. Investigation showed raw sewage from a cesspit had contaminated the well.

Born 15 Mar 1860; died 25 Oct 1930 at age 70.

Waldemar Mordecai Wolfe Haffkine was a Russian-British #bacteriologist who worked to #reduce #deaths by #cholera. He worked under Émile Roux at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, taking a particular interest in cholera, since epidemics were frequent in Europe. In 1892, he prepared an attenuated strain of cholera culture. He believed in its safely and he tested it on himself after self-injecting a concentrated #strain. In 1893, he went to #India, where he inoculated 45,000 people to #protect them #against #endemic cholera, despite difficult working conditions, a suspicious population, even with opposition from British medical officials. He reduced the death rate by 70% among those inoculated. He also attempted to produce a #vaccine against the #plague.

Many health professionals and researchers have written about the notable benefits of taking a nap in the afternoon. In fact, some evidence points to a 37% reduction in occurrences of #coronary #mortality in those who take an afternoon nap regularly.   Does that mean those who take naps might literally be saving their own lives? It’s quite possible! For those who aren’t necessarily able to fall asleep in the afternoon, that’s not necessarily a negative thing. It probably just means their bodies get enough sleep at night on a regular basis. Even so, a little rest in the afternoon is a good idea as the brain and body can still benefit, even if there’s no actual sleep. In lieu of a nap, it can be beneficial to spend a few minutes practicing #mindfulness #exercises or #meditation. Spend some time on deep breathing exercises, go through a body scan to notice which points might be responding to #stress, #listen to some #relaxing #music, and simply take a few minutes just to get refreshed before entering back into the busy world again!
