#Swedish #physicist who shared (with Nicolaas Bloembergen and Arthur L.Schawlow) the 1981 #NobelPrize for Physics for “his contribution to the development of high-resolution #electron #spectroscopy.”
He analyzed the resulting electrons that were knocked out from the interior of an #atom by a high energy X-ray #photons. Thus he could measure the binding energy of atomic electrons with higher accuracy than was previusly possible.
Furthermore, since that binding energy was somewhat dependent upon the chemical environment of the atom, this provided a new tool of chemical analysis—#ESCA (Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis).
ESCA is now used by hundreds of laboratories around the world to investigate surface reactions, such as corrosion or catalytic reactions, and others also of great important in #industrial #chemistry.
His father, Karl Manne Georg Siegbahn, received the 1924 Nobel Prize in Physics.
