Nathan Schellenberg Kline was an American #psychiatrist who is credited with founding the field of #psychopharmacology. In 1953, he began investigating the use of a new drug, #reserpine, to treat #schizophrenia. He continued to pioneer in the #biochemical #treatment of mentally ill patients by introducing the use of such drugs as the #antidepressants #lithium and #iproniazid and the #tranquilizer resperine. Because these drugs so successfully drugs treated two of the major categories of psychiatric illness, thousands of patients - formerly considered untreatable - were able to leave institutions and to rejoin society. By 1957, iproniazid, first in the class of #monoamineoxidase (MAO) inhibitors, was treating an estimated 400,000 people in the U.S.

French chemist who is known for his research in partnership with Joseph-Bienaimé Caventou into #vegetable bases and the resulting contributions of #alkaloid #chemistry to the field of #medicine. They helped found the chemistry of vegetable alkaloids. They isolated #chlorophyll (1817), for which they coined the French name chlorophyle in Ann. de Chimie(1818), IX, 195. Their alkaloid discoveries included #strychnine (1818), #brucine (1819), #quinine (1820), caffeine (1821), and #cinchonine. In 1823, using elementary closed-tube analyses in which the alkaloids were combusted, they discovered #nitrogen was present in the compounds. Alkaloids are organic compounds which form water-soluble salts that perform various functions in medicine, including #analgesics (pain-killers), and respiratory #stimulants.

The World Water Day celebrates #water and raises #awareness of the global water #crisis, and a core focus of the observance is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: water and #sanitation for all by 2030. The theme of #WorldWaterDay 2021 is valuing water. The value of water is about much more than its price – water has enormous and complex #value for our households, food, culture, health, education, economics and the integrity of our natural #environment. If we overlook any of these values, we risk mismanaging this finite, irreplaceable resource. SDG 6 is to ensure water and sanitation for all. Without a comprehensive understanding of water’s true, multidimensional value, we will be unable to safeguard this critical #resource for the benefit of everyone.

Pascual-Castroviejo type II syndrome PHACE association PHACES association PHACES syndrome PHACE syndrome is a rare disorder that affects multiple systems of the body. This disorder is characterized by an association of several different abnormalities that occur together with greater frequency than would otherwise be expected. The term PHACE is an acronym; each letter stands for a word. The acronym comes from the first letter of some of the more common signs and symptoms of this disorder. PHACE stands for: (P)osterior fossa and other structural brain malformations; large (H)emangiomas of the face, neck, and/or scalp; anatomical anomalies of the cerebral or cervical (A)rteries; (C)ardiac anomalies/(C)oarctation of the aorta; and (E)ye abnormalities. If sternal anomalies are present, sometimes the term PHACES syndrome is used, with (S) standing for (S)ternal anomalies. The disorder occurs with much greater frequency in girls than boys. The specific symptoms and their severity can vary greatly from one individual to another. Most affected children will not exhibit all of the major symptoms potentially associated with this disorder. Some children with only develop mild problems associated with the disorder, while others will develop serious complications that greatly impact quality of life. The exact cause of PHACE syndrome is not known. PHACE syndrome was first identified in the medical literature in 1996.

Russian-British biochemist who discovered #cytochromes, as enzymes critical to the cell's use of oxygen (1923). His career began as an entomologist studying the life cycles of flies. While studying the absorption spectrum of the muscles of the horse botfly, that he noticed four absoption bands that disappeared when the cell suspension was shaken in air, but reappeared afterwards. He had found a #RespiratoryEnzyme. He named it cytochrome, and began a thorough investigation of its role in #CellularRespiration. Like haemoglobin, the cytochrome enzyme contains #iron. Cytochrome is a pigment found in some cells, such as bacteria and yeast. He studied also #catalase and #peroxidase which are also iron-containing enzymes with a role involving #oxygen.
