The retina is a thin layer of tissue that lines the back of the eye on the inside. It is located near the optic nerve. The purpose of the retina is to receive light that the lens has focused, convert the light into neural signals, and send these signals on to the brain for visual recognition.
Many vision problems that damage the retina occur later in life and could be avoided with early, and often quite simple, preventative measure. For example, high blood sugar is one of the ailments that damages the retina causing diabetic eye disease (retinopathy). if you make sure to test your blood sugar at least once a year or if your diabetic, keep it in normal limits, their vision could be saved.
