Last month, an expecting mother visited my clinic.
She looked healthy, cheerful, and confident.
Her first question to me was simple:
“Doctor, I feel perfectly fine. Do I still need the diabetes test during pregnancy?”
No symptoms. No discomfort. Everything seemed normal.
But we performed the routine screening.
And the report revealed Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM).
She was shocked.
Because like many women, she believed diabetes only happens later in life — not during pregnancy.
Fortunately, we detected it early.
With simple nutrition guidance, glucose monitoring, and lifestyle care, she completed her pregnancy safely and delivered a healthy baby.
Moments like this remind me why awareness is critical.
In India, nearly 1 in 5 pregnant women may develop Gestational Diabetes, often without any symptoms.
Which means thousands of mothers may be living with a silent metabolic risk without even knowing it.
This is why National Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Awareness Day (March 10) is so important — honoring the pioneering work of V. Seshiah, who transformed maternal diabetes care in India.
Because one simple action can make all the difference:
Early screening during pregnancy.
Sometimes, one test can protect two lives.
